Riesling Steinbügel 2018
The old Riesling vines in the Steinbügel vineyard produce very little fruit, making for a complex wine with mineral notes. It matures in large wooden barrels to develop luscious aromas of stone fruit, yellow peach, pineapple and maracuja complemented by a modest extract sweetness with vibrant acidity which is well integrated.
The vineyard: Steinbügel, our best vineyard right next to the winery, is located on a south-facing slope with permeable clayey primary sand soil with a high amount of lime. Being exposed to the sun, arid heat develops during the day, while chilly continental air brings freshness at night which results in great differences between the day and night temperatures. This, in turn, leads to the fresh, crisp acidity and a distinctive variety of aromas in the grapes. In the airy location, the grapes stay healthy in autumn and can ripen for a long time on the vines without being rot-infected. The long-lasting wines from this specific vineyard thus perfectly reflect the archetype of vintage and varietal.
Alc.: 13,5% • Acidity: 6,4 g/l • Residual sugar: 5 g/l
Vinification
Healthy grapes only were hand-picked at the end of October, sorted manually in the cellar, de-stemmed and gently pressed after 12 hours of maceration. The self-clearing must was left to ferment slowly with wild yeast from the vineyard (spontaneous fermentation) in traditional, large wooden barrels in the perfect atmosphere provided in the estate cellar. The wine aged on its lees in wooden barrels for several months to build its distinctive character with deep aromas of fruit and elegance. The wine was bottled in early autumn of the following year.
Recommended drinking temperature: 10-12°C
Anticipated maturity: Great ageing potential!
Food pairing
Excellent with antipasti, fish, shellfish and seafood, as well as white meat.
